  • I had her in my class for a year, Burcu. A somewhat withdrawn, 5 year old, who often sat looking at me from behind her locks with her big brown eyes. Burcu took in the world with an awakened look and a smile on her lips. She was smart, interested, fit in well with the group and always participated, even if it was often from a distance. Burcu was not a child who collapsed into something full, not a child who raised her finger first, not a child who drew attention to herself or spoke out. But there was one thing she made an exception for and that were my puppets Adriaan and Annabelle. There was something about them, that made her stand up. When I introduced Adriaan into my group she stood up very suddenly (which was very unusual for her) and said loudly: THAT'S A PUPPET! I confirmed to her, yes, that's right Adriaan is a puppet, are you curious about what he has to say? Yes, she was. Burcu enjoyed the puppets and told them more than she told me, but as long as she's been in my group, every time a puppet came out, she's raised her finger and asked me, "It's a fake, isn't it?" Children who ask this do not do so because they do not like or do not believe the puppet. In my experience, they do this because they need confirmation that they've seen it right, that it's a puppet talking, that it's not real. Give them that confirmation and ask them if they want the puppet to leave. You will find that this is rarely the case. In any case, Burcu didn't want it, she kept saying: 'no, I like him, Adriaan is my friend' I still think it's a beautiful story, and that's why I want to share it with you.   • I'm doing more and more with Facebook groups. Mainly because it is more intimate, there is more sharing and it is nice to be with like-minded people. I've started a Dutch-speaking group last year and I'm now also starting an English-speaking group, do you want to join? Awesome! Ik doe meer en meer met Facebookgroepen. Vooral omdat het intiemer is, er meer gedeeld wordt en het fijn is om met gelijkgestemden onder elkaar te zijn.   • The word 'hand puppet' evokes different associations, very different associations too: one thinks mainly of the puppet show, the other thinks of puppet theater or ventriloquism and yet another imagines how children are completely under the spell of the puppet. I think what you see in front of you determines your interest in picking up the puppet yourself. As a child I never played with hand puppets, and as a teacher I never did anything with puppet shows or puppet theatre. I only became interested in the hand puppet when I saw that the puppet causes something in children that I, as a teacher, was unable to do. I use the accessibility and confidence of the child in the puppet to let a child take steps that he takes less quickly without a hand puppet. I think in two roles: that of the puppet as a friend and that of myself as a teacher/educator. When I work with the puppet, my teacher role does not interfere with what happens between the child and the hand puppet. I'm not entering into a dialogue with my puppet, it's not a role play, not an act, not a "teacher activity." I let my hand puppet perform that in a way that children expect a friend to do.
